Casa da Cisterna is a charming boutique guest house set in the heart of Castelo Rodrigo. This medieval hilltop village boasts views across the plains to the Spanish border and Douro River from its ruined castle.
Casa da Cisterna has been beautifully restored with modern touches and feels like a relaxing home away from home.
Owned and run by two biologists - whose ornithological interests are given away by the paintings, books and sculptures found throughout the property - the guest house has been beautifully restored with modern touches and feels like a relaxing home from home.
There are two suites and nine double bedrooms named after local birds and trees, each individually decorated and all thoroughly comfortable.
Built into the hillside on terraces, the house has a small garden on the middle level and another garden with the infinity pool on the upper level, where there are deck chairs, a swinging bench and a hammock perfect for the sunny days this area enjoys.
Above this is the main house where there is a dining room and balcony which looks out over the surrounding terracotta-tiled roofs of the village and immense plateau beyond.
Casa da Cisterna is the perfect base from which to explore the stunning landscapes, wild areas and history of the region. Both the Douro International Natural Park and Faia Brava Reserve are close by, as are the incredible prehistoric rock-art of the Côa Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the vineyards of the Beira Interior and Douro Valley.
The fascinating Spanish cities of Salamanca and Cuidad Rodrigo are a few hours away, while Porto and Lisbon just over 3 hours drive. This is the perfect base for exploring the region, knowing you have all the luxurious creature comforts waiting for you on your return.
"The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them."
