Wildlife hides of Velebit

Wildlife watching is a unique experience, allowing you a chance to witness some of natures most illusive creatures. With specially designed features, the wildlife hides are ideal for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Locally crafted and designed to match the forested region, each hide was place in a specific location according to animal behavior and movement. The hides are well insulated and rather spacious inside, with comfortable director chairs, viewing windows and special camera ports. Each hide has two comfortable beds for the overnight experience, and a small toilet is also available if needed.

The hides mimic piles of logged timber, which in the forested area is a common occurrence and an aspect that wildlife is more accustomed to seeing. The hides are approached by firstly a vehicle and then for the last section a short silent walk to avoid alerting any near by animals.

Over the last summer season, the hides have been tested and camera traps used to monitor animal movements. Great viewings of bear, red deer, wild boar and wolf have been recorded. The area of Velebit has a rich wildlife population and these hides are helping in establishing a supporting structure to continue to protect them.

Half day hide experiences start at a set meeting point around 15:30 in the afternoon, where your local photographic and nature guide, Nino Salkic will meet you and brief you on the afternoon & evening ahead. After a 30 - 40 minute drive into the mountains you leave the vehicle and approach the hide on foot. On average the hide experience lasts between four and six hours depending on the season, daylight and animal movements.

For photography enthusiasts, a full night experience is also an option and runs from 15:30 until 8:30 the following morning. This activity includes and overnight packed meal and tea / coffee.

The area in which these hides are operated is wild, and nature has no time frame nor control...we cant guarantee animal sightings but provide you with the best opportunity we can.
