Frequently asked questions

General questions

Do we receive any travel documents before we travel?

Yes, the European Safari Company will send you all the travel information and documentation you require in advance, accessible via PDF or via our ESC app.

I have dietary restrictions. Is this a problem?

No, not at all – just let us know in advance and your guide will keep an eye on things throughout your trip to make sure you're never left hungry or forgotten about.

I have health problems. Is this a problem?

This should always be considered before traveling, and discussed with the European Safari Company, but normally simple health challenges or allergies are very manageable. It’s always important to advise your guide of any medical conditions you may have so that he / she is aware of these

With how many people can we travel in a group - maximum?

The size should be based on experiences and available accommodations so this varies, but great wildlife experience numbers should be limited to 6 – 10 on average.

What do we need to bring/ pack?

This will vary but a standard packing list will always be included in your documentation and you can also preview this under the ‘Trip Details’ section of each safari.

Is it safe to be around wildlife in Europe?

First and foremost, yes but only at a safe distance and with a profound respect for the animals and areas you are in. You should count your blessings when seeing wild animals in nature – it’s an amazing treat.

Do we need travel insurance?

Yes, it is essential to always have your travels insured and include all medical insurance requirements as well. These details should also be passed onto your guide for during the trip.

What happens in case of an accident during our safari?

We have strong local partners who are prepared for a variety of situations and are in contact with local medical and rescue facilities. Your guide will also have extensive knowledge and course of action depending on the severity. If the group is prepared to continue and can do so this will of course happen, once the injured guest has been safely and effectively treated.

Who do you work with locally?

We work with specially selected partners from the areas, small businesses supporting nature and rewilding and who have a high regard for wildlife and protecting nature.

How do the local Rewilding areas benefit from us travelling there?

Travellers with the European Safari Company not only experience some of Europe’s finest nature, but directly learn about and contribute to rewilding, and support local communities. Dedicated levies from each booking support rewilding initiatives, while local nature-based businesses benefit from income, job creation and developmental support from Rewilding Europe.

Standard safaris

What is a standard safari trip?

We make a distinction between standard safari trips and tailor made trips. Standard safari trips are pre packaged safaris: you can often choose your travel date (if there is availability), but you can not change the itinerary, accommodation, or length of your stay.

A few of our standard safaris are only available on set dates. Some of our safaris are available in a group setting, but most will be privately guided. This does not mean the guide is with you at all times – you will meet him/her for your guided experience in nature and they are available for you on the ground if you have questions.

If you like to completely build your own safari in terms of destination, duration and according to your needs and wishes, we recommend you contact our travel specialists for a tailor made trip. It is possible to book these trips ‘privately guided throughout, which means traveling with an experienced and qualified guide who handles your trip from start to finish.

Do we need to book our own train/flights and other transportation?

Transport to your destination should always be handled by you or your travel specialist. Sometimes internal transfers are included in your safari and in the price. You will be able to see this is the ‘Trip Details’ section of each safari.

If you book a tailor made trip that is ‘privately guided throughout’, all local transport in the country will be handled and coordinated for you by the private guide. You don’t have to worry about car rentals or transfers, and your guide will make sure you leave and arrive on time.

How do we get from the train station or airport to our first accommodation?

See above – this depends on your travel experience and destination but with all standard safaris, you will need to arrange your own transport to your first accommodation or the meeting point with the guide, unless you have booked a transfer with us (avaialble for some areas).

Tailor made safaris

What is a tailor made trip?

We make a distinction between standard safari trips and tailor made trips. If you like to completely build your own safari in terms of destination, duration and according to your specific needs and wishes, we can put together a tailor made trip for you. It is possible to book these trips ‘privately guided throughout, which means traveling with an experienced and qualified guide who handles your trip from start to finish. You are also able to dive deeper into the rewilding efforts in the area and can meet with the local Rewilding Europe team. Tailor made trips come with a higher price tag than standard safari trips. Standard safari trips are pre packaged safaris: you can often choose your travel date (if there is availability), but you can not change the itinerary, accommodation, or length of your stay.

What does 'privately guided throughout' means?

Traveling with an experienced and qualified guide who handles your trip from start to finish. An experienced guide has travelled extensively, worked around the world and has several years of hospitality and service experience. A professional, a naturalist and the person who you as a guest lean on and depend on to coordinate and handle all the aspects of your trip. Privately guided means extra detail, more personalisation and better information as you travel.

Will the host be with us at all times?

Your guide is available for almost all the day, and is there to not only coordinate your experiences but join them, bringing insights and valuable information to the forefront of your experience. Joining for meals or late evening drinks around the fire, early morning coffee and tracking animals in the wild, your private guide is with you throughout. Time outs are also perfectly acceptable – dinner alone, or a relaxing morning without being accompanied is easy and simple to coordinate – a great Private guide will anticipate this and even plan it for you.

Do we need to book our own flights and transportation?

Transport to your local airport and flights to the destination should always be handled by you or your travel agent / specialist. If you book a ‘privately guided throughout trip’, all local transport in the country will be handled and coordinated for you by the private guide. You don’t have to worry about car rentals or transfers, and your guide will make sure you leave and arrive on time.

How do we get from the airport or train station to our first accommodation?

See above – depends on your travel experience and destination but your guide will have all the details and lead the way.

Do we need to bring cash/ credit card to our tailor made trip?

It’s always useful to travel with some accessible currency or a credit card – you might want to stop and do some shopping along the way, but your guide will handle any meals or local costs for you as pre-arranged with the European Safari Company.

Will we meet with local Rewilding experts?

This is possible but should be planned in advance where applicable. Your private guide, Simon Collier worked for Rewilding Europe across all the project areas for five years and has in depth knowledge of the impacts, challenges and teams in the region.
